How Long Does a Driver’s Medical Examination Take?

How Long Does the Driver’s Medical Examination Take and when should You Do it?

Renewing your driver’s license is a procedure that all drivers must carry out sooner or later. Although it is often perceived as a complex or cumbersome process, the truth is that it can be quick and easy if you know how to organize yourself. At Semedi Salud, we tell you how long it really takes to do the medical examination and when is the best time to do it to avoid unforeseen events or penalties.

Why is the Medical Examination Compulsory for Driving?

How long does a driver's medical examination take?

The medical examination is a requirement of the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) to ensure that drivers maintain the physical, sensory and mental capacities necessary to drive safely. Whether you are going to renew your license or you are obtaining a new one, this check is mandatory and must be carried out in an authorized center such as Semedi Salud.

How Long Does it Take to Do the Driver’s Medical Examination?

One of the most frequent questions we are asked in the clinic is: “how long will it take?” The good news is that the process is fast, without waiting and very structured.

Total Estimated Time: between 20 and 30 Minutes

At Semedi Salud, the average duration of the medical examination is 25 minutes, from when the patient arrives until they leave with the procedure completed. This includes:

  • Reception and verification of documentation
  • Performance of medical tests:
    • Visual acuity
    • Hearing
    • Motor coordination and reflexes
    • Blood pressure control and clinical history
  • Delivery of the report and electronic management with the DGT

It is not necessary to come fasting or bring photographs. We take care of sending all the data directly to the DGT.

What Documentation Do You Need to Bring?

To speed up the process and avoid delays, make sure you bring:

For License Renewal:

  • Valid DNI (National Identity Document) or NIE (Foreigner Identity Number)
  • Driver’s license (even if it is expired)
  • Glasses or contact lenses if you use them for driving

For First Obtaining the License:

  • Valid DNI (National Identity Document) or NIE (Foreigner Identity Number)
  • Glasses/contact lenses if applicable

In our center we will take the official photograph and manage the referral of the medical report to the DGT automatically. You do not need to go to traffic or provide additional papers.

When should You Do the Medical Examination?

Planning ahead will save you scares, fines and complications. Most driving licenses in Spain have a validity of 10 years (for private drivers under 65 years of age).

When is the Ideal Time to Do it?

Ideally, the medical examination should be carried out between 3 months and 1 month before the expiry date of the license.

This allows you to:

  • Avoid crowds or last minute appointments
  • Have leeway if any medical or administrative incident arises
  • Renew without losing days of validity of the new license (the renewal is added to the end of the current period)

At Semedi Salud you can renew in advance, and receive a provisional permit valid while the definitive one arrives by mail.

What Happens if My License Expires?

Driving with an expired license is a serious infraction that can entail:

  • Fine of up to €200
  • Problems with insurance in case of accident
  • Immobilization of the vehicle in controls

It is not necessary to repeat theoretical or practical exams if your license is expired, but you will have to do the medical examination and pay the corresponding fee. Therefore, we recommend not to wait until the last moment.
